Techs

“Techs” are physical or magical skills in Chrono Trigger and Jets of Time. Characters learn them via gaining Tech Points from battle. See the tech growth page for charts of each character's tech point requirements.

Tech points are cumulative, but four characters (Crono, Marle, Lucca, and Frog) are not able to use magic natively. Under the standard ruleset which does not automatically unlock magic, these four must visit Spekkio if they are to learn more than 3 techs. Once they learn their third tech and don't have magic unlocked, they will stop gaining tech points until they do.

Due to a programming error, when a character gains enough Tech Points from a battle to learn a new Tech, they will then gain those Tech Points again. This means that by routing how many points are gained and when, a player can exploit this to gain double or even triple TP from some battles.

Any single tech that has an elemental component to it is considered magical damage for the purposes of battle, even if in-story the tech was not magical (example: Lucca's Flame Toss comes from a flamethrower that she owns, but the type of damage it does is not distinguished from her Fire spell).

Physical single techs follow the same rules as regular physical attacks and may miss. A double/triple tech will never miss.

Tech ATB Penalty

In Chrono Trigger, most techs are meant to cause an ATB penalty to the user on their next turn. However, due to a bug, the first character listed will not be affected, so single techs don't have an ATB penalty. Dual Tech

While Single Techs are always either physical or magical (and almost all magical techs are elemental), damage from Dual (and Triple) Techs is calculated based on each of the attacks that goes into it. For example, Fire Sword's damage is the sum of the physical damage done to the enemy by Crono's Spincut and the magical damage done by Lucca's Fire. The damage will be reduced if used against an enemy that resists one or the other.

Duplicate Dual Techs

Duplicate Dual Techs is an optional flag that may be turned on when playing with Duplicate Characters. It is not enabled by default. This flag allows the player to use new, custom dual techs with two of the same character. Both characters must know the required single tech.
